Hayley Schultz is the 2018 Gravel Fellow

The recipient of the 2018/19 Judith Gravel Fellowship in Pediatric Audiology is Hayley Schultz, a third-year doctoral student in audiology at Washington University in St. Louis. The fellowship, sponsored by the Hear the World Foundation and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, provides a mentored experience in pediatric audiology practice honoring the legacy of the late Dr. Gravel, an expert in the field of pediatric audiology.

Hayley, originally from Powell, Ohio, completed her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at The College of Wooster where she developed an interest in global audiology and participated in a hearing aid mission trip to the Philippines. Now a third-year AuD student at Washington University in St. Louis, Hayley was selected for participation in a federally funded grant that allowed her to complete additional pediatric coursework, clinical experiences with children, and the opportunity to create parent-focused learning modules.

Gaining insights through clinical practice

Excited to receive the Gravel fellowship, Hayley stated: “It is an honor to be selected for such a prestigious fellowship that offers me the opportunity to be mentored by UNC’s exceptional pediatric audiologists. I was hoping to spend my fourth year at a nationally recognized hospital, and to do so in a fellowship named for Dr. Judith Gravel is incredibly inspiring. I look forward to strengthening my foundational knowledge and clinical skills, so that I may follow Dr. Gravel’s example and provide the best possible care to children with hearing loss and their families.”

Hayley will begin her fourth-year externship in May 2018 at UNC Hospitals where she will be the ninth Gravel Fellow. At UNC Hospitals she will gain extensive experience and mentoring in the diagnosis and management of infants and young children with hearing loss including many with complex needs.

About the Fellowship

The Judith Gravel Fellowship was created by the Hear the World Foundation and is hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), USA, within the Department of Otolaryngology and is named for Dr. Judith Gravel who passed away in 2008. “Dr. Gravel was internationally renowned for her expertise in pediatric audiology and for her many contributions to clinical research and professional service. She particularly believed in the importance of allowing students to gain experience in clinical practice,” said Professor Richard Seewald, a member of the Advisory Board for the Hear the World Foundation. The aim of the fellowship is to carry on her mission and legacy through the education of exceptional graduate students preparing for careers in pediatric audiology.
