HEARING CARE FOR ALL
«Hearing Care for All» is the motto of World Hearing Day 2021. The WHO dedicates March 3 to raising awareness around the world of the importance of good hearing, the early detection and the treatment of hearing loss. This year marks the launch of the first World Report on Hearing with important facts about hearing health and a call for governments to make audiological treatment accessible to everyone. As a member of the WHO World Hearing Forum, the Hear the World Foundation has supported the preparation of this report.
Alarming facts
Currently one in five people around the world are affected by hearing loss and 80% of these people live in low-income and middle-income countries, and have no access to audiological care. The WHO predicts that, by 2050, 2.5 billion people will suffer from hearing loss and more than 700 million people will need rehabilitation therapy. However, instances of hearing loss could often have been avoided by preventative measures or early treatment. Hearing loss in children could be prevented by means of public health measures in as many as 60% of cases.
The personal and social cost, and the cost to society of untreated hearing loss is immense. If hearing loss is not detected or treated in a timely manner, this can result in social isolation, and limited access to education and the employment market.
