When a hearing aid can no longer help
Technology and medicine are now so far advanced that even people who have very little hearing have a chance of regaining better hearing: a cochlea implant (CI) is an electronic hearing prosthesis, which can be used when conventional hearing aids are not suitable. Children especially who are born deaf are often fitted with a CI. Fitting of a CI at an early age is advantageous, enabling the children to develop their speech and language skills.
The path to the cochlea implant
Find out here how people can gradually return to the world of sounds with the help of a Cochlea Implant.
1. Diagnosis and referral:
The necessity of a CI is usually diagnosed by an ENT physician or an audiologist who then refers the patient to a specialist CI centre.
2. Consultation:
There it is determined whether the person is an eligible candidate for a CI. Should this be the case, he/she is informed about the operation, the way the CI operates, as well as the rehabilitation.
3. Operation:
In an ENT clinic the surgeon implants the inner components of the CI and places the electrode in the cochlea. The operation lasts approximately two to four hours.
4. Fitting and rehabilitation:
The first activation and fitting of the system by the CI audiologist usually occurs two to four weeks after the operation. The post-operative rehabilitation then begins:
- The speech processor in adult patients is set according to individual hearing ability. Extensive hearing and speech training lasting for several months then follows.
- Rehabilitation for children usually lasts several months or years. The children learn hearing and speech ability with intensive support during that time.
